Abstract
The Neuwaldegg Summer Seminar is the annual “signature” seminar at the Neuwaldegg Institute. It brings together students from a wide range of academic disciplines and nationalities to reflect on the constitutive elements of stable democracies and genuine freedom. A team of four professors with expertise in different aspects of philosophy present an array of issues under the following headings: fundamentals of philosophical reflection, comparative moral reasoning, issues in bioethics, and political philosophy. Evening seminars as well as informal meetings ensure a fruitful discussion of how these principles can be applied in contemporary circumstances.

Fundamentals of Philosophy
(Dr. Sean Kelsey)
Dr. Sean Kelsey is a specialist in ancient philosophy teaching at the University California Los Angeles (UCLA) He earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University with a dissertation entitled “Causation in Plato and Aristotle”
Comparative Moral Reasoning
(Dr. Michael Pakaluk)
After receiving his Ph.D. from Harvard University where he studied under W.V. Quine and John Rawls, Dr. Pakaluk, began teaching philosophy at Clark University in Worcester, MA. He has also been a visiting professor or scholar at Brown, St. Andrews, Cambridge and Harvard Dr. Pakaluk is the author of several books and many scholarly articles in various areas of philosophy including the Clarendon Aristotle volume on Nicomachean Ethics, and, more recently, Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics: An Introduction, published by Cambridge University Press.
Issues in Bioethics
(Dr. Patrick Derr)
Dr. Patrick Derr earned his Ph.D. from Notre Dame University in 1976. He has been teaching philosophy at Clark University for almost 30 years, including graduate courses in Philosophy of Science. He has published several works on the topic of environmental ethics. Lately, Dr. Derr has directed his research towards medical ethics and health policy.
Political Philosophy
(James R. Stoner)
James R. Stoner, a Pre-Law Advisor in Department of Political Science in Louisiana State University. He specializes in political theory, English common law, and American constitutionalism. Dr. Stoner is a member of the National Council on the Humanities. He also serves as the Pre-Law Advisor.

Participants should plan to arrive on the afternoon of Sunday August 13th and depart on Sunday morning August 20th. Please notify us in advance of any exceptions.
Participants
Graduate students of Law, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Business, Medicine and related fields from countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Applicants must have a command of the English language sufficient to understand and participate in discussions.
Conference fees
Each participant will receive a full scholarship, covering food, tuition and lodging in Castle Neuwaldegg (Vienna, Austria)
